Product Overview
The Cisco C9500-FAN is a hot-swappable, field-replaceable single fan module designed for Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series high-performance fixed aggregation switches. It delivers standardfront-to-back (port-side intake to rear exhaust)airflow to dissipate heat generated by switching ASICs, processors, optics and internal circuit components. Each Catalyst 9500 chassis requires multiple fan modules to achieve N+1 cooling redundancy.
Important Note: Do not confuse this fan module with Catalyst 9200/9300 series fans or Nexus platform fan trays. Catalyst 9500X models use dedicated C9500X-FAN series fans and are not compatible with C9500-FAN. All installed fans within one chassis must share identical airflow direction; mixing airflow types is unsupported.

Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan automatically adjusts rotational speed based on real-time chassis temperature, operating altitude and traffic load. It runs at low RPM under light workloads to reduce acoustic noise, and accelerates airflow dynamically under high-temperature conditions. Onboard thermal sensors transmit environmental telemetry to IOS XE operating system.

Airflow Direction: Front port-side intake → Rear exhaust. This mainstream airflow design matches Catalyst 9500 AC/DC power supplies, optimized for standard cold-aisle rack layouts in enterprise data centers and core network rooms.

OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Technicians can replace defective fan modules without powering off or rebooting the Catalyst 9500 switch, eliminating lengthy network outages during hardware maintenance. The module features quick-release latch for convenient tool-free installation and removal.

Local status LED on each fan module provides instant monitoring:

Once a fault is detected, IOS XE generates system logs and sends SNMP traps to centralized network monitoring platforms.

N+1 Cooling Redundancy Mechanism
Supported Catalyst 9500 chassis adopts multi-fan redundant architecture. If one fan module fails, remaining functional fans automatically increase speed to maintain sufficient cooling capacity. Failed fans should be replaced immediately to remove thermal single point of failure risk. The system will trigger critical alarms and initiate protection shutdown if the minimum number of operational fans cannot be satisfied.
