Product Overview

The Cisco C9500X-FAN-1U-R is a hot-swappable, field-replaceable individual fan module designed exclusively for Cisco Catalyst 9500X high-density core aggregation switches. It providesfront-to-back airflow (port-side intake, rear exhaust)and is identified by a red pull tab, suitable for standard cold-aisle data center rack layout. Each Catalyst 9500X chassis supports up to six identical fan modules with N+1 cooling redundancy.
Important Note: Do not mix airflow types within a single chassis. Its counterpartC9500X-FAN-1U-Fdelivers back-to-front airflow with blue pull tab. All installed fan modules must adopt the same airflow direction. This module only supports Catalyst 9500X series and cannot be used on standard Catalyst 9500, Catalyst 9300/9400, or Nexus 9000 switch platforms.

Key Features

  1. Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
    The fan dynamically adjusts rotational speed based on internal chassis temperature, altitude and forwarding workload. It operates at low RPM under light loads to reduce acoustic noise, and automatically increases airflow during high-temperature and heavy traffic conditions. Onboard thermal sensors transmit real-time environmental telemetry to IOS XE.
  2. Front-to-Back Airflow Architecture
    Airflow Direction: Front port-side intake → Rear exhaust. This mainstream airflow design must be matched with front-to-back airflow power supplies to maintain consistent thermal design for cold aisle containment deployment.
  3. OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
    Engineers can replace a defective fan module without powering off or rebooting the Catalyst 9500X switch. The system supports temporary continuous operation during fan replacement, minimizing downtime for mission-critical enterprise core and data center networks.
  4. Built-in Visual Status LED Indicator
    Status LED integrated on each fan module delivers instant local status feedback:
  • Solid Green: Normal operating status
  • Solid Amber / Flashing Amber: Fan stall, hardware fault or abnormal state
    Once a failure is detected, IOS XE generates environmental logs and sends SNMP traps to remote network monitoring systems.
  1. N+1 Fan Redundancy Support
    The Catalyst 9500X chassis accommodates six fan modules in an N+1 redundant configuration. If a single fan fails, remaining functional fans ramp up speed to maintain adequate cooling capacity. Timely replacement of faulty fans is strongly recommended to eliminate thermal single point of failure risk. A minimum of five operational fans is required for stable switch operation.
  2. High-Reliability Construction
    Industrial-grade long-life bearing fan assembly engineered for continuous 24/7 operation in core network rooms and data centers. Optimized for heat dissipation under heavy loads generated by high-density 100G/400G optical interfaces.
