Product Overview

The Cisco FAN-MOD-3HS is a high-speed hot-swappable integrated fan tray exclusively designed for theCisco Catalyst 6503 (WS-C6503)switch chassis andCisco 7603modular service router chassis. This tray contains four built-in fans delivering side-to-side airflow. It is the high-performance counterpart of FAN-MOD-3 (standard-speed version). FAN-MOD-3HS ismandatorywhen deploying Supervisor Engine 32 or Supervisor Engine 720 inside the chassis to meet enhanced thermal dissipation requirements. Only one fan tray bay exists on Catalyst 6503 / 7603 chassis; a fully functional fan tray is required for safe continuous operation.
Important Note: This tray is chassis-specific hardware and cannot be interchanged with FAN-MOD-3, FAN-MOD-4HS, WS-C6503-E-FAN and other 6500/7600 series fan trays. Individual fans inside the tray arenot field-replaceable. The entire tray must be replaced once any internal fan fails. Operating the equipment without an installed fan tray triggers critical thermal alarms and may lead to permanent hardware overheating damage.

  1. Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
    The fan tray dynamically adjusts rotational speed based on real-time chassis temperature, altitude and traffic load. It operates at low RPM under light workloads to reduce acoustic noise and automatically boosts airflow under high thermal conditions. Real-time thermal telemetry is transmitted to Cisco IOS for continuous environmental monitoring. Maximum airflow reaches 270 CFM at full operating speed.
  2. Side-to-Side Airflow Architecture
    Airflow Direction: Right-side intake → Left-side exhaust when facing the chassis front panel. This native thermal layout matches Catalyst 6503 and 7603 chassis design, providing balanced cooling for supervisors, line cards and power supplies. Suitable for enterprise wiring closets and service provider edge rack deployments.
  3. OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
    Engineers can replace the whole fan tray without powering off or rebooting Catalyst 6503 switch or Cisco 7603 router. Equipped with ergonomic handles and captive screws for convenient tool-free installation and removal, minimizing maintenance downtime for mission-critical networks.
  4. Front Panel Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
    Status LED located on the front face of the fan tray provides instant local visual feedback:
  • Solid Green: All internal fans operate normally
  • Solid Red: One or more internal fans stall or suffer hardware faults
    Cisco IOS records environmental event logs and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately upon fan fault detection.

    Four independent fans are integrated within one tray. If a single fan fails, remaining functional fans automatically ramp up speed to sustain basic cooling capacity. Administrators should replace the fan tray promptly after detecting any fan failure to eliminate thermal single-point-of-failure risks.
