Product Overview

The Cisco WS-C6K-9SLOT-FAN is astandard-speed hot-swappable integrated fan trayexclusively designed forCisco Catalyst 6009 and Catalyst 6509 non-E 9-slot modular switch chassis. It is the baseline cooling assembly, while WS-C6K-9SLOT-FAN2 serves as its high-speed upgrade variant. The tray integrates multiple built-in fans delivering side-to-side airflow to cool supervisor engines, line cards, power supplies and all internal chassis hardware. Each Catalyst 6009 / 6509 non-E chassis supports only one fan tray slot.
Important Note: This standard-speed fan tray officially supportsSupervisor Engine 1 and Supervisor Engine 2 only. It cannot satisfy thermal requirements of Supervisor Engine 32 or Supervisor Engine 720; WS-C6K-9SLOT-FAN2 is mandatory for these high-performance supervisors. Individual fans inside the tray are not field-replaceable, the entire tray must be replaced once any internal fan fails. It is incompatible with Catalyst 6509-E enhanced chassis. Operating equipment without a functional fan tray triggers critical thermal alarms and may result in permanent hardware overheating damage.

  4. Front Panel Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
    Status LED on the front face provides instant local visual feedback:
  • Solid Green: All internal fans operate normally
  • Solid Red: One or more internal fans stall or encounter hardware faults
    Cisco IOS generates environmental event logs and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately upon fan fault detection.

    Multiple independent fans are integrated within one tray. If a single fan malfunctions, remaining functional fans automatically ramp up speed to sustain basic cooling capacity. Operators should replace the fan tray promptly after any fan failure to eliminate thermal single-point-of-failure risks.
