Product Overview

The Cisco N7K-C7009-FAN is a hot-swappable integrated system fan tray exclusively designed for theCisco Nexus 7009 (N7K-C7009) 9-slot modular data center switch chassis. It delivers side-to-side forced airflow to cool supervisor modules, I/O line cards, fabric modules and internal chassis hardware. The Nexus 7009 chassis accommodatesone single N7K-C7009-FAN, mounted on the rear side of the chassis. A fully functional fan tray is mandatory for safe continuous equipment operation.
Important Note: This fan tray is chassis-specific hardware and cannot be interchanged with fan assemblies for Nexus 7004, 7010, 7018 or any other Nexus platform. Individual fans inside the tray are not field-replaceable; the entire tray must be swapped if any internal fan fails. During fan tray removal, operators must complete replacement within several minutes. If cooling is lost for an extended period, the chassis triggers thermal protection shutdown to avoid permanent hardware damage caused by overheating.

  1. Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
    The fan tray dynamically adjusts fan rotational speed based on real-time chassis temperature, operating altitude and thermal load of installed modules. Fans run at low RPM under light workloads to minimize acoustic noise, and automatically increase airflow when internal temperatures rise. All thermal status metrics are reported to Cisco NX-OS for continuous environmental monitoring.
  2. Side-to-Side Airflow Architecture
    Airflow Direction: Air intake from chassis right side → exhaust toward chassis left side. This native airflow design matches Nexus 7009 mechanical layout. Sufficient clearance must be reserved on both sides of the chassis to avoid blocking intake/exhaust vents, complying with standard hot-aisle / cold-aisle data center deployment standards.
  3. OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
    Technicians can replace the complete fan tray without powering off or rebooting the Nexus 7009 switch. Maintenance operations are carried out from the chassis rear panel, supporting non-disruptive servicing for mission-critical core data center networks. Proper ESD protection procedures are required during replacement.
  4. Status LED & Remote Environmental Monitoring
    Built-in status LED on the fan tray rear panel provides instant local visual indication:
  • Solid Green: All internal fans operate normally
  • Solid Amber/Red: Fan fault detected
    NX-OS generates environmental syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately upon detection of fan abnormalities.
