Cisco N9K-C9504-FAN2 Full English Description
Product Overview
The Cisco N9K-C9504-FAN2 is aGeneration 2 high airflow hot-swappable variable-speed fan trayexclusively designed for theCisco Nexus 9504 (N9K-C9504) 4-slot modular cloud-scale spine switch chassis. It delivers front-to-back (port-side intake) forced airflow and serves as the upgraded high-performance alternative to the baseline N9K-C9504-FAN. This fan tray is a mandatory cooling component for deployments equipped with high-power N9K-C9504-FM-G 400G fabric modules. The Nexus 9504 chassis supports up to three fan tray slots, and a minimum of two operational fan trays must be installed to sustain adequate system cooling.
Important Note: This fan tray is chassis-specific hardware. Mixed installation of N9K-C9504-FAN and N9K-C9504-FAN2 within one chassis isnot supported. Individual fans inside the tray are non-field-replaceable; the entire tray needs replacement upon internal fan failure. Extended insufficient cooling triggers thermal protection shutdown to prevent permanent hardware overheating damage. Standard ESD anti-static protocols are required during module handling and replacement.
Key Features
-
Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan tray dynamically adjusts fan rotational speed based on real-time chassis internal temperature, operating altitude and thermal load of installed fabric modules and line cards. Fans operate at low RPM under light workloads to reduce power draw and acoustic noise, and automatically ramp up airflow when temperatures rise. Continuous thermal telemetry data is reported to Cisco NX-OS or ACI firmware for full environmental monitoring.
-
Front-to-Back (Port-Side Intake) Airflow Architecture
Airflow Direction: Air intake from front port side → exhaust toward chassis rear. This airflow design complies with industry-standard hot-aisle / cold-aisle data center rack layout. Operators shall ensure front intake vents and rear exhaust openings remain unobstructed to maintain rated cooling efficiency.
-
OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Technicians can replace the fan tray without powering off or rebooting the Nexus 9504 switch. All maintenance operations are performed from the chassis rear panel, enabling non-disruptive servicing for mission-critical data center spine fabrics. At least two functional fan trays must remain installed during replacement activities.
-
Rear Panel Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
Built-in status LED indicator on the rear panel provides instant local visual feedback:
-
Solid Green: All internal fans operate normally
-
Solid Amber/Red: Fan fault or over-temperature alarm detected
NX-OS generates environmental syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately once fan anomalies are detected.
-
Enhanced High-Capacity Cooling Design
Integrated with six ultra-high-speed fans delivering increased airflow capacity (max power consumption306W per tray), capable of dissipating heat generated by high-density 400G fabric modules and high thermal-load multi-rate Ethernet line cards. Multiple independent fans provide temporary cooling backup if one internal fan fails. Administrators should arrange prompt replacement to eliminate thermal risks.
-
Data Center-Grade Reliability
Industrial long-life bearing fan assembly engineered for 24/7 continuous operation in enterprise and carrier-grade cloud data center spine layers. Optimized for high-density, high-speed 25G / 100G / 400G fabric deployments.
Supported Hardware Platforms
-
Cisco Nexus 9504 Modular Spine Switch Chassis (N9K-C9504)
Not compatible: Nexus 9508, Nexus 9516, Nexus 7000 family, Catalyst 4500 / 6500 switches and all Cisco router platforms.
Compatibility Reminder: Required for N9K-C9504-FM-G fabric modules; cannot be mixed with N9K-C9504-FAN in the same chassis.
Typical Application Scenarios
