Cisco N9K-C9508-FAN Full English Description
Product Overview
The Cisco N9K-C9508-FAN is a baseline variable-speed, hot-swappable fan tray purpose-built exclusively for theCisco Nexus 9508 (N9K-C9508) 8-slot modular cloud-scale spine switch chassis. It delivers front-to-back (port-side intake) forced airflow to cool supervisor modules, system controllers, fabric modules, I/O line cards and all internal chassis hardware. The Nexus 9508 chassis supports up to three fan tray slots, and a minimum of two operational fan trays must remain installed to maintain adequate system cooling. N9K-C9508-FAN2 serves as its higher airflow Generation 2 upgrade variant.
Important Note: This fan tray is chassis-locked hardware.Mixing N9K-C9508-FAN and N9K-C9508-FAN2 within a single chassis is unsupported. Individual fans inside the tray cannot be replaced separately; the entire tray must be swapped after internal fan failure. Removing multiple fan trays simultaneously triggers a thermal protection countdown, which may force chassis shutdown to prevent permanent hardware damage from overheating. ESD protection procedures are mandatory during module handling and replacement.
Key Features
-
Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan tray dynamically adjusts fan rotational speed based on real-time chassis internal temperature, operating altitude and thermal load of installed modules. Fans run at low RPM under light workloads to lower power consumption and acoustic noise, and automatically ramp up airflow when temperatures rise. Continuous thermal status telemetry is reported to Cisco NX-OS or ACI operating firmware for persistent environmental monitoring.
-
Front-to-Back (Port-Side Intake) Airflow Architecture
Airflow Direction: Air intake from front port panel → exhaust toward chassis rear. This airflow design complies with standard hot-aisle / cold-aisle data center rack deployment specifications. Operators must ensure front intake vents and rear exhaust openings remain unobstructed to maintain rated cooling efficiency.
-
OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Technicians can replace the fan tray without powering off or rebooting the Nexus 9508 switch. All maintenance operations are executed from the chassis rear panel, supporting non-disruptive servicing for mission-critical data center spine fabrics. At least two functional fan trays must stay installed during replacement activities.
-
Rear Panel Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
Built-in status LED indicator on the rear face provides instant local visual feedback:
-
Solid Green: All internal fans operate normally
-
Solid Amber/Red: Fan fault or over-temperature alarm detected
NX-OS generates environmental syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately once fan anomalies are detected.
-
Internal Fan Compensation Design
Multiple independent fans are integrated within each tray assembly. If one internal fan unit malfunctions, remaining operational fans automatically accelerate to sustain temporary minimum cooling capacity. Administrators should arrange replacement promptly to eliminate thermal single-point-of-failure risks.
-
Data Center-Grade Reliability
Industrial long-life bearing fan assembly engineered for 24/7 continuous operation in enterprise and carrier-grade cloud data center spine layers. Optimized to dissipate heat generated by medium thermal-density 25G/100G Ethernet line cards and standard fabric modules.
Supported Hardware Platforms
-
Cisco Nexus 9508 Modular Spine Switch Chassis (N9K-C9508)
Not compatible: Nexus 9504, Nexus 9516, Nexus 7000 series, Catalyst 4500 / 6500 switches and all Cisco router platforms.
Compatibility Reminder: N9K-C9508-FAN isnot supportedwith N9K-C9508-FM-G 400G fabric modules; N9K-C9508-FAN2 is required for FM-G deployments.
Typical Application Scenarios
-
Data center spine layer deployments built on Nexus 9508 switches with standard fabric modules
-
Spare replacement baseline cooling assembly for failed fan trays on Nexus 9508 chassis

Short Version for E-commerce Listing
Cisco N9K-C9508-FAN baseline hot-swappable variable-speed fan tray dedicated for Cisco Nexus 9508 8-slot modular spine switch chassis with front-to-back airflow, maximum power consumption 250W. Supports OIR online replacement without equipment outage and NX-OS dynamic thermal speed adjustment. Standard cooling component for Nexus 9508 deployed with non-G series fabric modules.
Supplementary Remark
High airflow Generation2 upgrade counterpart: N9K-C9508-FAN2 (required for N9K-C9508-FM-G 400G fabric modules). N9K-C9508-FAN cannot be mounted on other Nexus 9500 family chassis models, and mixed fan tray models inside one chassis are not supported.
