Cisco N9K-C9508-FAN2 Full English Description
Product Overview
The Cisco N9K-C9508-FAN2 is aGeneration 2 high-airflow, variable-speed hot-swappable fan trayexclusively designed for theCisco Nexus 9508 (N9K-C9508) 8-slot cloud-scale modular spine switch chassis. It delivers front-to-back (port-side intake) forced airflow and serves as the upgraded high-performance alternative to the standard N9K-C9508-FAN fan tray. This fan tray ismandatory for chassis deployments equipped with N9K-C9508-FM-G 400G fabric modules. The Nexus 9508 chassis accommodates up to three fan tray slots, and a minimum of two operational fan trays must remain installed to sustain adequate system cooling.
Important Note: This fan tray is chassis-specific hardware.Mixed deployment of N9K-C9508-FAN and N9K-C9508-FAN2 within a single chassis is not supported. Individual fans inside the tray cannot be replaced separately; the entire tray assembly must be swapped out upon internal fan failure. Loss of sufficient cooling triggers thermal protection mechanisms to avoid permanent hardware damage caused by overheating. Operators must follow standard ESD anti-static protocols during handling and replacement.
Key Features
-
Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan tray dynamically adjusts fan rotational speed based on real-time chassis internal temperature, operating altitude and thermal load of installed fabric modules and line cards. Fans operate at low RPM under light workloads to reduce power consumption and acoustic noise, and automatically ramp up airflow when internal temperatures rise. Continuous thermal telemetry data is reported to Cisco NX-OS or ACI firmware for comprehensive environmental monitoring.
-
Front-to-Back (Port-Side Intake) Airflow Architecture
Airflow Direction: Air intake from the front port panel → exhaust toward chassis rear. This airflow design complies with industry-standard hot-aisle / cold-aisle data center rack layout. Operators must ensure front intake vents and rear exhaust openings remain unobstructed to maintain rated cooling efficiency.
-
OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Technicians can replace the fan tray without powering off or rebooting the Nexus 9508 switch. All maintenance operations are performed from the chassis rear panel, enabling non-disruptive servicing for mission-critical data center spine fabrics. At least two functional fan trays must stay installed during replacement activities.
-
Rear Panel Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
Built-in status LED indicator on the rear face provides instant local visual feedback:
-
Solid Green: All internal fans operate normally
-
Solid Amber/Red: Fan fault or over-temperature alarm detected
NX-OS generates environmental syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately once fan anomalies are detected.
-
High-Capacity Redundant Cooling Design
Integrated with six ultra-high-speed fans delivering enhanced airflow capacity (maximum power consumption450W per tray), capable of dissipating heat generated by high-density 400G fabric modules and high thermal-load multi-rate Ethernet line cards. Multiple independent fans provide temporary cooling backup if one internal fan fails. Administrators should arrange replacement promptly to eliminate thermal operation risks.
-
Data Center-Grade Reliability
Industrial long-life bearing fan assembly engineered for 24/7 continuous operation in enterprise and carrier-grade cloud data center spine layers. Optimized for high-density deployments with 25G / 100G / 400G line cards and FM-G high-speed fabric modules.
Supported Hardware Platforms
-
Cisco Nexus 9508 Modular Spine Switch Chassis (N9K-C9508)
Not compatible: Nexus 9504, Nexus 9516, Nexus 7000 family, Catalyst 4500 / 6500 switches and all Cisco router platforms.
Compatibility Reminder: Mandatory cooling component for chassis installed with N9K-C9508-FM-G fabric modules; cannot be mixed with N9K-C9508-FAN in one chassis.
