Cisco N9K-C9808-FAN-A Full English Description
Product Overview
The Cisco N9K-C9808-FAN-A is a first-generation variable-speed, hot-swappable fan tray purpose-built exclusively for theCisco Nexus 9808 (N9K-C9808) 8-slot high-performance modular data center spine switch chassis. It delivers front-to-back (port-side intake / A-airflow) forced cooling airflow for supervisor modules, fabric modules, and high-density 100G/400G line cards. The Nexus 9808 chassis supports up to four fan tray slots, implementing N+1 redundant cooling architecture. All four fan trays are recommended for full thermal redundancy under maximum load conditions.
Important Note: This fan tray is chassis-specific hardware designed only for Nexus 9808. It cannot be used with Nexus 9804, Nexus 9500 series or other Cisco switching platforms. Individual fans inside the tray are not field-replaceable; the entire tray assembly must be swapped after internal fan failure. All installed fan trays and power trays within one chassis must adopt identical airflow direction. Loss of multiple fan trays will trigger thermal protection mechanisms to avoid permanent hardware damage caused by overheating. Standard ESD anti-static procedures must be followed during module handling and replacement.
Key Features
-
Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan tray dynamically adjusts fan rotational speed based on real-time chassis internal temperature, altitude and thermal load of installed fabric and line cards. Fans operate at low RPM under light workloads to reduce power consumption and acoustic noise, and automatically ramp up airflow when temperatures rise. Continuous thermal telemetry data is reported to Cisco NX-OS for comprehensive environmental monitoring.
-
Front-to-Back (Port-Side Intake / A-Airflow) Architecture
Airflow Direction: Air intake from front port panel → exhaust toward chassis rear. This airflow design fully complies with standard hot-aisle / cold-aisle data center rack layout. Operators shall ensure front intake vents and rear exhaust openings remain unobstructed to maintain rated cooling efficiency.
-
OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Technicians can replace the fan tray without powering off or rebooting the Nexus 9808 switch. All maintenance operations are performed from the chassis rear panel, supporting non-disruptive servicing for mission-critical large-scale cloud data center spine fabrics. Sufficient remaining operational fan trays must stay installed during replacement activities.
-
Rear Panel Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
Built-in status LED indicator on the rear face provides instant local visual feedback:
-
Solid Green: All internal fans operate normally
-
Solid Amber/Red: Fan fault or over-temperature alarm detected
NX-OS generates environmental syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately once fan anomalies are detected.
-
High-Capacity Redundant Cooling Design
Equipped with multiple independent high-speed fans inside each tray. If one internal fan unit malfunctions, remaining functional fans automatically accelerate to sustain temporary cooling capacity. Administrators should arrange replacement promptly to eliminate thermal single-point-of-failure risks.
-
Carrier & Cloud Data Center-Grade Reliability
Industrial long-life bearing fan assembly engineered for 24/7 continuous operation in high-performance cloud and service provider data center spine layers. Optimized to dissipate heat generated by high-density 100G/400G multi-rate Ethernet line cards and N9K-C9808-FM-A fabric modules.
Supported Hardware Platforms
