Cisco N9K-C9300-FAN Full English Description
Product Overview
The Cisco N9K-C9300-FAN is a variable-speed, hot-swappable fan tray designed for theCisco Nexus 9300 fixed-form-factor leaf/spine switch platforms (N9396PX, N93128TX, N9336PQ and related first-generation Nexus 9300 switches). Two airflow variants are available:N9K-C9300-FAN (Port-side Intake / A-type, burgundy marking)andN9K-C9300-FAN-B (Port-side Exhaust / B-type, blue marking). The chassis supports up to three fan trays with N+1 redundant cooling architecture. A minimum of two operational fan trays must remain installed to sustain adequate thermal dissipation.
Important Note: This fan tray is exclusive to Gen1 Nexus 9300 fixed switches. It cannot be used on Nexus 9500 modular chassis, Nexus 9300-FX/FX3/GX newer generations, Catalyst switches or other Cisco hardware. All fan trays and power supplies within one chassis must use identical airflow direction; mixed airflow directions are unsupported and cause overheating risks. Individual fans inside the tray are not field-replaceable; the whole tray requires replacement upon internal fan failure. ESD anti-static procedures are mandatory during handling and replacement.
Key Features
-
Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan tray dynamically adjusts rotational speed based on real-time internal chassis temperature, operating altitude and thermal load of installed line cards. Fans operate at low RPM under light traffic to reduce power consumption and acoustic noise, and automatically accelerate airflow when temperatures rise. All thermal telemetry data is continuously reported to Cisco NX-OS or ACI firmware for environmental monitoring.
-
Selectable Airflow Architecture
-
N9K-C9300-FAN: Port-side intake (Front-to-Back). Air enters from front port panel, exhausts to chassis rear.
-
N9K-C9300-FAN-B: Port-side exhaust (Back-to-Front). Air intake from rear, exhaust out front port panel.
This dual airflow design enables flexible deployment to match standard hot-aisle / cold-aisle data center rack layouts. Operators must keep intake and exhaust openings unobstructed.
-
OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Technicians can replace the fan tray without powering off or rebooting the Nexus 9300 switch. All maintenance operations are performed from the chassis rear panel, enabling non-disruptive servicing for mission-critical leaf and spine fabrics. During replacement, at least two functional fan trays must stay installed.
-
Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
Built-in status LED on the rear face provides instant local indication:
-
Solid Green: All internal fans operate normally
-
Solid Amber/Red: Fan fault or over-temperature alarm detected
NX-OS generates environmental syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately once fan anomalies are detected.
-
N+1 Redundant Cooling Capability
Multiple independent fans are integrated within each tray assembly. If one internal fan malfunctions, remaining operational fans automatically ramp up speed to provide temporary cooling capacity. Administrators should arrange replacement promptly to eliminate single-point thermal failure risks.
-
Data Center-Grade Reliability
Industrial long-life bearing fan assembly engineered for 24/7 continuous operation in enterprise and cloud data center leaf/spine layers. Optimized for medium-density 10G/40G Ethernet traffic workloads.
Supported Hardware Platforms
-
Cisco Nexus 9300 Gen1 Fixed Switches: N9K-N9396PX, N9K-N93128TX, N9K-N9336PQ
Not compatible: Nexus 9300-FX, FX3, GX series; Nexus 9500/9800 modular chassis; Nexus 7000 family; Catalyst 4500/6500 switches and all Cisco routers.
Typical Application Scenarios
-
Data center leaf and spine deployments built on first-generation Nexus 9300 switches (NX-OS or ACI mode)
-
Spare replacement cooling assembly for failed fan trays on Nexus 9300 Gen1 chassis
-
Medium-density 10G/40G access and aggregation data center fabrics
