Cisco N9K-C9300-FAN2 Full English Description
Product Overview
The Cisco N9K-C9300-FAN2 is theGen2 variable-speed hot-swappable fan traydesigned exclusively for Cisco first-generation Nexus 9300 fixed leaf switches. It supportsport-side intake (front-to-back airflow, burgundy marking). Its counterpartN9K-C9300-FAN2-Bprovides port-side exhaust (back-to-front airflow, blue marking).
Supported chassis accommodate up to three fan trays in a 2+1 N+1 redundant cooling architecture; a minimum of two operational fan trays must remain installed to maintain sufficient thermal dissipation. N9K-C9300-FAN2 delivers improved airflow and reliability compared to the original N9K-C9300-FAN Gen1 fan tray.
Important Note: This fan tray is platform-specific hardware.Mixing airflow directions (intake / exhaust) or mixing Gen1 and Gen2 fan trays within one chassis is unsupported and causes overheating risks. All installed fan trays and power supplies must adopt identical airflow direction. Individual fans inside the tray cannot be replaced separately; the whole tray assembly must be swapped after internal fan failure. Standard ESD anti-static procedures must be followed during handling and replacement.
Key Features
-
Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan tray dynamically adjusts fan rotational speed based on real-time internal chassis temperature, operating altitude and traffic thermal load. Fans operate at low RPM under light workloads to reduce power draw and acoustic noise, and automatically ramp up airflow as temperatures rise. All thermal telemetry data is continuously reported to Cisco NX-OS or ACI firmware for comprehensive environmental monitoring.
-
Front-to-Back (Port-Side Intake) Airflow Architecture
Airflow Direction: Air intake from front port panel → exhaust toward chassis rear. This design complies with standard hot-aisle / cold-aisle data center rack layouts. Operators must ensure front intake vents and rear exhaust openings remain unobstructed to maintain rated cooling efficiency. The port-side exhaust alternative isN9K-C9300-FAN2-B (Back-to-Front).
-
OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Technicians can replace the fan tray without powering off or rebooting the Nexus 9300 switch. All maintenance operations are performed from the chassis rear panel, enabling non-disruptive servicing for mission-critical data center leaf fabrics. During replacement activities, at least two functional fan trays must stay installed.
-
Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
Built-in status LED on the rear face provides instant local visual feedback:
-
Solid Green: All internal fans operate normally
-
Solid Amber/Red: Fan fault or over-temperature alarm detected
NX-OS generates environmental syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately upon detection of fan anomalies.
-
N+1 Redundant Cooling Capability
Multiple independent fans are integrated within each tray assembly. If one internal fan unit malfunctions, remaining operational fans automatically accelerate to sustain temporary cooling capacity. Administrators should arrange replacement promptly to eliminate single-point thermal failure risks.
-
Data Center-Grade Reliability
Optimized industrial long-life bearing fan assembly engineered for 24/7 continuous operation in enterprise and cloud data center leaf layers. Enhanced mechanical design improves service life for medium-density 10G / 40G Ethernet workloads.
