Cisco N9K-C9300-FAN3 Full English Description
Product Overview
The Cisco N9K-C9300-FAN3 is the3rd-Generation high-efficiency variable-speed hot-swappable fan traybuilt exclusively for Cisco first-generation Nexus 9300 fixed leaf switches. It deliversport-side intake (Front-to-Back) airflowand carries a burgundy identification stripe. Its complementary variantN9K-C9300-FAN3-Bprovides port-side exhaust (Back-to-Front) airflow marked with a blue stripe.
The supported Nexus 9300 Gen1 chassis holds up to three fan trays with N+1 redundant cooling architecture. A minimum of two operational fan trays must remain installed continuously to maintain adequate thermal dissipation. Compared with N9K-C9300-FAN (Gen1) and N9K-C9300-FAN2 (Gen2), the FAN3 model improves airflow efficiency, reduces power consumption and acoustic noise for long-duration data center operation.
Important Note: This fan tray is platform-locked hardware.Mixing fan generations (FAN / FAN2 / FAN3) or mixing intake/exhaust airflow directions within one chassis is strictly unsupported and will trigger thermal alarms and overheating risks. All fan trays and power supplies deployed in the same chassis must share identical airflow direction. Individual fans inside the tray cannot be replaced separately; the whole FRU must be swapped upon internal fan failure. Standard ESD anti-static protocols must be followed during handling and replacement.
Key Features
-
Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan tray dynamically adjusts fan rotational speed based on real-time internal chassis temperature, altitude and thermal load of installed ports. Fans operate at low RPM under light workloads to cut power draw and noise, and automatically ramp up airflow as temperatures rise. Continuous multi-zone thermal telemetry is reported to Cisco NX-OS or ACI firmware for full environmental monitoring.
-
Front-to-Back (Port-Side Intake) Airflow Architecture
Airflow Direction: Air intake from front port panel → exhaust toward chassis rear. This layout complies with standard hot-aisle / cold-aisle data center rack specifications. Operators must ensure front intake vents and rear exhaust openings stay unobstructed to preserve rated cooling efficiency. Reverse airflow alternative: N9K-C9300-FAN3-B (Back-to-Front).
-
OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Technicians can replace the fan tray without powering off or rebooting the Nexus 9300 switch. All maintenance operations are performed from the chassis rear panel, supporting non-disruptive servicing for mission-critical data center leaf fabrics. At least two functional fan trays must remain installed during replacement activities.
-
Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
Built-in status LED on the rear face provides instant local visual feedback:
-
Solid Green: All internal fans operate normally
-
Solid Amber/Red: Fan fault or over-temperature alarm detected
NX-OS generates environmental syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately once fan anomalies are detected.
-
N+1 Redundant Cooling Capability
Multiple independent fans are integrated within each tray assembly. If one internal fan unit malfunctions, remaining operational fans automatically accelerate to sustain temporary cooling capacity. Administrators should arrange replacement promptly to eliminate single-point thermal failure risks.
-
Enhanced Data Center-Grade Reliability
Optimized low-noise industrial bearing fan assembly engineered for 24/7 continuous operation in enterprise and cloud data center leaf layers. The Gen3 design lowers vibration and extends service life for medium-density 10G/40G Ethernet workloads.
Supported Hardware Platforms
-
Cisco Nexus 9300 Gen1 Fixed Switches:
