Cisco NXA-FAN-35CFM-PE Full English Description
Product Overview
The Cisco NXA-FAN-35CFM-PE is a variable-speed, hot-swappable single fan module designed for multiple fixed-form-factor Cisco Nexus 9000 and Nexus 3000 series data center switches. It deliversPort-side Exhaust (Back-to-Front) airflowwith a maximum airflow capacity of 35 CFM. The module features ablue handle markerto identify port-side exhaust airflow direction. Its direct counterpart isNXA-FAN-35CFM-PI, which provides Port-side Intake (Front-to-Back) airflow with burgundy marking.
Important Note: All fan modules and power supplies installed within the same chassismust adopt identical airflow direction. Mixing PE (exhaust) and PI (intake) airflow modules is unsupported and will cause thermal imbalance and overheating risks. Each fan module contains dual internal rotors; if one rotor fails, the remaining rotor provides partial cooling. The entire fan FRU must be replaced upon module-level failure. Standard ESD anti-static procedures are required during removal and installation.
Key Features
-
Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan module dynamically adjusts rotational speed based on real-time internal chassis temperature, operating altitude and port thermal load. Fans operate at low RPM under light workloads to reduce power draw and acoustic noise, and automatically increase speed to boost airflow when temperatures rise. Continuous thermal status telemetry is reported to Cisco NX-OS or ACI firmware for environmental monitoring.
-
Back-to-Front (Port-side Exhaust) Airflow Architecture
Airflow Direction: Air intake from chassis rear → exhaust out of the front port panel. This layout suits rack deployments where switch ports face the hot aisle. Operators must keep intake and exhaust openings unobstructed to maintain rated cooling efficiency.
-
OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Technicians can replace the fan module without powering off or rebooting the host Nexus switch. All maintenance operations are performed from the chassis front or rear fan bay, enabling non-disruptive servicing for leaf and aggregation fabrics. A sufficient number of functional fans must remain installed during replacement to avoid thermal protection shutdown.
-
Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
Built-in status LED indicator provides instant local visual feedback:
-
Solid Green: All internal rotors operate normally
-
Solid Amber/Red: Rotor fault or over-temperature alarm detected
NX-OS generates environmental syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately once fan faults are detected.
-
Dual-Rotor Internal Redundancy
Two independent rotors are integrated inside each fan tray. If one rotor stops working, the second rotor continues to deliver partial cooling capacity temporarily. Administrators should arrange replacement promptly to eliminate thermal vulnerability.
-
Data Center-Grade Reliability
Brushless DC industrial fan assembly engineered for 24/7 continuous operation in enterprise and cloud data center leaf layers, optimized for medium-to-high density 25G/100G fixed port switches.
Supported Hardware Platforms
Compatible Cisco fixed switches include:
N9K-C93240YC-FX2, N9K-C93180YC-FX3, N9K-C93108TC-FX3P, N9K-C92300YC, N3K-C3432D-S
Not compatible: Nexus 9500/9800 modular chassis, older Nexus 9300-PX/TX/PQ Gen1 switches, Catalyst switching platforms.
Typical Application Scenarios
-
Leaf fabric deployments on Nexus 9000 FX/FX3 fixed switches running standalone NX-OS or ACI fabric mode
-
Spare replacement cooling module for port-side exhaust configured Nexus fixed switches
-
Data center rack layouts requiring port-facing hot-aisle deployment
-
Mission-critical cloud and enterprise infrastructure requiring hot-swappable non-disruptive maintenance
