Cisco NXA-FAN-65CFM-PI Full English Description
Product Overview
The Cisco NXA-FAN-65CFM-PI is a variable-speed, hot-swappable fan module designed for high-density fixed-form-factor Cisco Nexus data center switches. It deliversPort-side Intake (Front-to-Back) airflowwith a maximum airflow capacity of 65 CFM and features aburgundy-colored handle markerfor airflow identification. Its direct counterpart isNXA-FAN-65CFM-PE, which provides Port-side Exhaust (Back-to-Front) airflow with a blue handle marker.
Important Note: All fan modules and power supplies deployed within the same chassismust adopt identical airflow direction. Mixing PI (intake) and PE (exhaust) airflow modules is unsupported, which will cause thermal imbalance, hotspots and overheating risks. Each module integrates dual independent internal rotors. If one rotor fails, the remaining rotor provides temporary partial cooling; the entire fan FRU needs full replacement upon module fault. Standard ESD anti-static procedures must be followed during removal and installation.
Key Features
-
Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan module dynamically adjusts rotational speed based on real-time internal chassis temperature, operating altitude and thermal load of active ports. Fans operate at low RPM under light workloads to reduce power consumption and acoustic noise, and automatically ramp up speed to boost airflow as temperatures rise. Continuous thermal telemetry data is transmitted to Cisco NX-OS or ACI firmware for comprehensive environmental monitoring.
-
Front-to-Back (Port-side Intake) Airflow Architecture
Airflow Direction: Cool air enters from the front port panel, and hot air exhausts toward the chassis rear. This airflow scheme fits standard data center rack deployments where switch port panels face the cold aisle. Operators must keep intake and exhaust openings unobstructed to maintain rated cooling efficiency.
-
OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Technicians can replace the fan module without powering off or rebooting the host Nexus switch. All maintenance operations are carried out via rear fan bays, supporting non-disruptive servicing for leaf and aggregation fabrics. Sufficient functional fan modules must stay installed during replacement activities to avoid thermal protection shutdown.
-
Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
Built-in status LED provides instant local visual feedback:
-
Solid Green: All internal rotors operate normally
-
Solid Amber/Red: Rotor fault or over-temperature alarm detected
NX-OS generates environmental syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately once fan anomalies are detected.
-
Dual-Rotor Internal Redundancy
Two independent rotors are integrated inside each fan tray. If one internal rotor malfunctions, the second rotor delivers temporary limited cooling capacity. Administrators should arrange replacement promptly to eliminate thermal single-point-of-failure risks.
-
Data Center-Grade Reliability
Brushless DC industrial fan assembly engineered for 24/7 continuous operation in enterprise and cloud data center leaf layers, optimized for high-density 25G/100G fixed port switches under heavy traffic workloads.
Supported Hardware Platforms
Compatible Cisco fixed switches include:
N9K-C9336C-FX2, N9K-C93240YC-FX2, N9K-C9364C, N9K-C93360YC-FX2, N3K-C3636C-R
Not compatible: Nexus 9500/9800 modular chassis, legacy Nexus 9300-PX/TX/PQ Gen1 switches, early Nexus 3000 platforms, Catalyst switching platforms.
Typical Application Scenarios
-
Leaf fabric deployments on Nexus 9000 FX/FX2 fixed switches running standalone NX-OS or ACI fabric mode
-
Spare replacement cooling module for port-side intake configured Nexus high-density fixed switches
