Cisco NXA-SFAN-35CFM-PE Full English Description
Product Overview
The Cisco NXA-SFAN-35CFM-PE is a variable-speed, hot-swappable compact fan module designed for latest-generation Cisco Nexus 9000 fixed-form-factor data center switches. It deliversPort-side Exhaust (Back-to-Front) airflowwith a maximum airflow capacity of 35 CFM and is identified by ablue handle marking. Its direct counterpart isNXA-SFAN-35CFM-PI, which provides Port-side Intake (Front-to-Back) airflow with burgundy handle marking.
Important Note: All fan modules and power supplies installed within the same chassismust adopt identical airflow direction. Mixing PE (exhaust) and PI (intake) airflow modules is unsupported and will create thermal imbalance, hotspots and overheating risks. Each module contains dual independent internal rotors. If one rotor fails, the remaining rotor provides temporary partial cooling; the entire fan FRU needs full replacement upon module fault. Standard ESD anti-static procedures must be followed during removal and installation.
Key Features
-
Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan module dynamically adjusts rotational speed based on real-time internal chassis temperature, operating altitude and thermal load of active ports. Fans operate at low RPM under light workloads to reduce power consumption and acoustic noise, and automatically ramp up speed to boost airflow as temperatures rise. Continuous thermal telemetry data is transmitted to Cisco NX-OS or ACI firmware for comprehensive environmental monitoring.
-
Back-to-Front (Port-side Exhaust) Airflow Architecture
Airflow Direction: Cool air enters from chassis rear, and hot air exhausts out of the front port panel. This airflow scheme fits rack deployments where switch port panels face the hot aisle. Operators must keep intake and exhaust openings unobstructed to maintain rated cooling efficiency.
-
OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Technicians can replace the fan module without powering off or rebooting the host Nexus switch. All maintenance operations are carried out via dedicated fan bays, supporting non-disruptive servicing for leaf and aggregation fabrics. Sufficient functional fan modules must stay installed during replacement activities to avoid thermal protection shutdown.
-
Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
Built-in status LED provides instant local visual feedback:
-
Solid Green: All internal rotors operate normally
-
Solid Amber/Red: Rotor fault or over-temperature alarm detected
NX-OS generates environmental syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately once fan anomalies are detected.
-
Dual-Rotor Internal Redundancy
Two independent rotors are integrated inside each fan tray. If one internal rotor malfunctions, the second rotor delivers temporary limited cooling capacity. Administrators should arrange replacement promptly to eliminate thermal single-point-of-failure risks.
-
Data Center-Grade Reliability
Compact brushless DC industrial fan assembly engineered for 24/7 continuous operation in enterprise and cloud data center leaf layers, optimized for modern medium-density 25G/100G fixed-port Nexus switches.
Supported Hardware Platforms
Compatible Cisco fixed switches include:
N9K-C93108TC-FX3, N9K-C9332D-GX2B, N9K-C93400LD-H1, N9K-C9336C-SE1, N9K-C9348Y12C-SE1
Not compatible: Nexus 9500/9800 modular chassis, legacy Nexus 9300-PX/TX/PQ Gen1 switches, older Nexus 3000 platforms, Catalyst switching platforms.
Distinction reminder: NXA-SFAN series is different from NXA-FAN series fan modules and cannot be cross-used.
Typical Application Scenarios
-
Leaf fabric deployments on next-generation Nexus 9000 FX3/GX/SE series fixed switches running standalone NX-OS or ACI fabric mode
-
Spare replacement cooling module for port-side exhaust configured compact Nexus fixed switches
-
Data center rack layouts requiring port-facing hot-aisle deployment
-
Mission-critical cloud and enterprise infrastructure requiring hot-swappable non-disruptive maintenance
