Cisco N2K-C2248-FAN Full English Description
Product Overview
The Cisco N2K-C2248-FAN is a hot-swappable integrated fan tray developed for Cisco Nexus 2000 Series Gigabit Fabric Extenders (FEX). It deliversPort-side Exhaust (Back-to-Front) standard airflow. Its reversed airflow counterpart isN2K-C2248-FAN-B, which supports Port-side Intake (Front-to-Back) airflow.
Important Note: All fan trays and power supplies installed in the same FEX chassismust adopt identical airflow direction. Mixing PE and PI airflow components will trigger thermal imbalance, hotspots and overheating failures. The tray integrates multiple independent fans; partial cooling remains available if one fan fails, but the entire fan FRU needs complete replacement upon tray-level fault. Standard ESD anti-static procedures are mandatory during removal and installation.
Key Features
-
Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan tray dynamically adjusts fan rotational speed based on real-time internal chassis temperature, operating altitude and traffic thermal load. Fans operate at low RPM under light workloads to reduce power consumption and acoustic noise, and automatically accelerate to boost airflow when internal temperatures rise. Continuous thermal telemetry data is transmitted to NX-OS running on the parent Nexus switch for comprehensive environmental monitoring.
-
Back-to-Front (Port-side Exhaust) Airflow Architecture
Airflow Direction: Cool air enters from the rear of the FEX chassis, and hot air exhausts out of the front port panel. This airflow design fits rack deployments where the FEX port panel faces the hot aisle. Operators must ensure intake and exhaust openings remain unobstructed to maintain rated cooling efficiency.
-
OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Technicians can replace the fan tray without powering off the Fabric Extender or disrupting upstream network traffic. Maintenance operations are completed via the front panel fan bay of the 1RU FEX chassis, supporting non-disruptive data center operations.
-
Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
Built-in status LED provides instant local visual feedback:
-
Solid Green: All internal fans operate normally
-
Solid Amber: Fan fault or over-temperature alarm detected
NX-OS generates environmental syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring systems immediately once fan anomalies are detected.
-
Multi-Fan Internal Redundancy
Multiple independent fans are integrated within a single tray assembly. If one fan unit malfunctions, remaining fans deliver temporary limited cooling capacity. Administrators should arrange replacement promptly to eliminate thermal risks.
-
Data Center-Grade Reliability
Industrial brushless DC fan assembly engineered for 24/7 continuous operation within enterprise and cloud data center access fabrics, optimized for Nexus 2000 series Gigabit FEX workloads.
Supported Hardware Platforms
Compatible Cisco Nexus Fabric Extenders:
N2K-C2224TP, N2K-C2248TP, N2K-C2248TP-E
Not compatible: Nexus 9000 fixed/modular switches, Nexus 5500/7000 standalone switches, Nexus 2232PP, Nexus 2300 series FEX and Catalyst switching platforms.
