Product Overview

Important Note: The ASR-9001 chassis supports only one fan tray. OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) is supported starting from IOS XR Release 4.3.0 with ambient temperature constraints. Complete fan tray replacement must be finished within 5 minutes after removal to avoid chassis thermal protection shutdown. Standard ESD anti-static procedures are mandatory during handling. This fan tray cannot be used for other ASR9000 models such as ASR9006, ASR9010, ASR9900 series routers. No alternative reverse airflow variant exists for ASR-9001 platform.

1. Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation

   The fan tray automatically adjusts fan rotational speed based on real-time internal chassis temperature, altitude and overall thermal load. Fans run at low RPM under light load conditions to reduce power consumption and acoustic noise, and accelerate dynamically to increase airflow when internal temperature rises. All environmental telemetry is reported to IOS XR for centralized monitoring.
2. Side-to-Side (Right-to-Left) Airflow Architecture

   Cool ambient air enters the right side of the router chassis; hot exhaust air flows out from the left side. Maintain sufficient clearance on both sides of the rack to avoid airflow blockage and thermal hotspots.
3. OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support

   Technicians can perform fan tray replacement while the router remains powered and forwarding traffic (supported on IOS XR 4.3.0 and above). Strictly comply with the 5-minute maintenance time window to prevent over-temperature protection.
4. Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring

   Front-panel status LED provides intuitive local indication:

• Solid Green: All internal fans operate normally
• Solid Amber/Red: Fan fault or over-temperature alarm triggered
  IOS XR generates syslog messages and sends SNMP traps to monitoring platforms once fan failures are detected.

   Multiple independent fan rotors are integrated into a single tray assembly. If a single rotor fails, remaining fans provide temporary partial cooling. Administrators should arrange FRU replacement promptly to eliminate cooling vulnerability.
