Product Overview

The Cisco ASR-9006-FAN-V2 is the second-generation hot-swappable carrier-grade fan tray (FRU) exclusively designed for the Cisco ASR 9006 6-slot modular Aggregation Services Router within the ASR 9000 Series. It serves as the upgraded direct replacement for the legacyASR-9006-FAN (V1). The ASR 9006 chassis requirestwo identical fan trays to implement full redundant cooling. This tray adopts fixed native chassis airflow design for heat dissipation of line cards, RSPs and power entry modules. No alternative reversed airflow variant is available for the ASR 9006 platform.
Important Note: Mixing V1 and V2 fan trays inside the same chassis is officially unsupported. OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) is supported under specified ambient temperature limits. All fan tray replacement work must be completed within 5 minutes after removal to avoid chassis thermal protection shutdown. Standard ESD anti-static handling procedures are mandatory during installation and removal. This fan tray cannot be deployed on ASR-9001, ASR-9010, ASR9900 series or any other ASR9k router models. Minimum IOS XR Release 6.1.2 is required for full recognition and feature support.

  1. Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
    The fan tray dynamically adjusts rotor rotational speed based on real-time internal chassis temperature, operating altitude and overall system thermal load. Fans operate at low RPM under light traffic loads to reduce power consumption and acoustic noise, and automatically accelerate to increase airflow as internal temperatures rise. Compared with V1 hardware, V2 optimizes fan control algorithms, improves airflow efficiency and reduces peak power draw. All environmental telemetry data is uploaded to IOS XR for unified environmental monitoring.
  2. Chassis Airflow Architecture
    Cool air enters from the side intake of the ASR 9006 chassis, and hot exhaust air flows toward the rear of the chassis. Maintain sufficient unobstructed clearance around rack ventilation openings to avoid airflow blockage and prevent thermal hotspots.
  3. OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
    Engineers can perform fan tray replacement while the router remains powered and forwards live traffic. Operators must strictly comply with the 5-minute maintenance time limit to prevent over-temperature protection shutdown.
  4. Visual Status LED & Remote Monitoring
    Front panel status LED provides intuitive local status indication:
  • Solid Green: All internal fan rotors operate normally
  • Solid Amber/Red: Fan fault or over-temperature alarm triggered
    IOS XR generates syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring platforms immediately once fan anomalies are detected.
  1. N+1 Internal Fan Redundancy
    Multiple independent fan rotors are integrated into a single tray assembly. If one rotor fails, remaining fans supply temporary partial cooling capacity. Administrators should arrange FRU replacement promptly to eliminate thermal operational risks. The chassis requires two working fan trays to achieve full cooling redundancy.
  2. Carrier-Grade Reliability
    Optimized industrial brushless DC fan assembly engineered for 24/7 continuous operation within service provider core, aggregation and mobile backhaul routing environments. The V2 revision enhances component durability, dust resistance and long-running aging tolerance versus the first-generation ASR-9006-FAN.
