Product Overview
The Cisco ASR1000X-FAN is a hot-swappable high-performance fan tray FRU designed exclusively for the next-generationASR 1006-X and ASR 1009-X modular Aggregation Services Routers (ASR1000-X platform). It provides mandatory system-level forced-air cooling for Route Processors (RP), Embedded Services Processors (ESP-X), EPA line cards, midplane and internal chassis assemblies. This fan tray adopts nativeFront-to-Rear airflow. No alternative reverse airflow variant exists for ASR1006-X / ASR1009-X chassis.
Important Note: Each ASR1006-X and ASR1009-X chassis requires multiple identical ASR1000X-FAN fan trays to achieve N+1 redundant cooling. OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) is supported under IOS XE with specified ambient temperature limits. All fan tray replacement must be completed within the chassis thermal protection timeout window to avoid emergency over-temperature shutdown. Standard ESD anti-static handling procedures must be followed during installation and removal. This fan traycannot be interchangedwith ASR1006-FAN, ASR1009-FAN or fan modules for original non-X ASR1000 routers, ASR9000 series routers, Nexus or Catalyst switches.

Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
The fan tray dynamically adjusts rotor rotational speed based on real-time internal chassis temperature, operating altitude and overall system thermal load. Fans operate at low RPM under light traffic loads to reduce power consumption and acoustic noise, and automatically accelerate to boost airflow when internal temperatures rise. All environmental telemetry data is uploaded to IOS XE for unified environmental monitoring.

Front-to-Rear Airflow Architecture
Cool air enters from the front intake of the ASR1006-X / ASR1009-X chassis; hot exhaust air discharges toward the rear of the rack. Maintain sufficient unobstructed ventilation clearance at front and rear rack sides to avoid airflow blockage and prevent thermal hotspots.

OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
Field engineers can perform fan tray replacement while the router remains powered and forwards live network traffic. Operators must strictly comply with the official maintenance time limit to prevent triggering chassis thermal protection.

IOS XE generates syslog entries and sends SNMP traps to centralized monitoring platforms immediately once fan anomalies are detected.

Internal Fan Redundancy
Multiple independent fan rotors are integrated within a single tray assembly. If a single rotor fails, remaining fans supply temporary partial cooling capacity. Administrators should arrange FRU replacement promptly to eliminate cooling vulnerability. The platform requires multiple operational fan trays to maintain full cooling redundancy.
