Product Overview

The Cisco ISR8200-FAN (commercial alias; official ordering PIDs:FAN-1RU-PI / FAN-1RU-PE / FAN-1RU-PI-V2 / FAN-1RU-PE-V2 / FAN-2RU-PI / FAN-2RU-PE) is a hot-swappable modular fan module FRU engineered exclusively for theCisco 8200 Series Secure Routers (8201, 8201-24H8FH, 8201-32FH, 8202, 8202-32FH-M). Each independent fan module integrates multiple brushless DC fan rotors to provide forced cooling for CPU, routing processors, high-density interface modules and internal power assemblies. Multiple fan modules are deployed within one chassis to deliver N+1 redundant cooling architecture.
Important Hardware Note: Two airflow options are available:
  • PI = Port-Side Intake (cold aisle airflow, air enters port side)
  • PE = Port-Side Exhaust (hot aisle airflow, air exhausts from port side)
    All fan modules and power supplies installed in the same routermust share identical airflow direction. Standard ESD anti-static handling procedures are mandatory during maintenance. These fan modules cannot be interchanged with ISR4000 series, ASR series or Catalyst switch fan trays.

Key Features

  1. Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation
    Each fan module dynamically adjusts rotor rotational speed according to real-time internal chassis temperature and ambient altitude. Fans run at low RPM under light traffic loads to minimize power consumption and acoustic noise, and automatically ramp up speed to boost airflow when temperatures rise. All thermal telemetry is monitored and reported via Cisco IOS XE.
  2. Dual Selectable Airflow Architecture
  • PI (Port-Side Intake): Air intake at rear port side, exhaust toward front bezel
  • PE (Port-Side Exhaust: Air intake at front bezel, exhaust toward rear port side
    Match airflow type to data center cold/hot aisle layout. Maintain unobstructed ventilation space around the chassis to avoid airflow blockage and thermal hotspots.
  1. OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) Support
    The fan module fully supports hot-swap replacement while the router remains powered and forwards live traffic. If one module is removed, remaining active fan modules automatically increase speed to compensate cooling capacity. Do not leave empty fan slots for extended periods; maximum safe operation time with missing fan module is limited to avoid over-temperature shutdown. IOS XE automatically recognizes and validates fan hardware after installation.
  2. System Monitoring & Alarm Notification
    IOS XE continuously monitors individual fan rotor RPM status.
  • Solid Green LED: All internal fan rotors operate normally
  • Amber LED: Fan rotor fault detected within the module
    The system generates console syslog messages and SNMP traps to notify network administrators once fan anomalies occur.
  1. N+1 Fan Redundancy
    Chassis adopts distributed modular fan architecture. Single fan module failure does not cause immediate outage; remaining modules provide temporary adequate cooling. Engineers should schedule immediate FRU replacement upon receiving fault alerts to eliminate long-term cooling risk.
  2. Enterprise & Carrier-Grade Reliability
    High-performance industrial brushless DC fans designed for 24/7 continuous operation in medium-to-large enterprise branch SD-WAN edges, multi-service internet gateways and carrier Ethernet aggregation deployments. Optional external dust filter accessories are available for harsh operating environments.
