Product Overview

• C8300-FAN-1R: Fan assembly for 1RU Catalyst 8300 routers
• C8300-FAN-2R: Standard airflow fan tray for 2RU Catalyst 8300 routers
• C8300-FAN-2R-R: Reverse airflow fan tray for 2RU chassis (NEBS compliant)
  The integrated fan tray contains multiple brushless DC fans, delivering forced-air cooling for CPU, routing processors, network interface modules and internal power subsystems.

Important Hardware Note:

1RU fan unitdoes NOT support OIR (hot swap); router power must be shut down before replacement.

2RU fan tray supports limited OIR maintenance. All fan modules and power supplies within the same chassismust adopt identical airflow direction. Standard ESD anti-static handling procedures are mandatory during maintenance. These fan assemblies cannot be interchanged with ISR8200, ISR4000 series, ASR series router fan trays or Catalyst/Nexus switch fan modules.

1. Intelligent Variable-Speed Thermal Regulation

   The fan tray dynamically adjusts rotor rotational speed based on real-time internal chassis temperature and operating altitude. Fans operate at low RPM under light workloads to reduce power consumption and acoustic noise, and automatically accelerate to boost airflow when temperatures rise. All thermal telemetry data is monitored and reported via Cisco IOS XE.
2. Selectable Airflow Architecture

• C8300-FAN-1R / C8300-FAN-2R:Front-to-Rear airflow (standard)
• C8300-FAN-2R-R: Reverse airflow (Port-Side Intake) for hot/cold aisle data center deployment
  Maintain unobstructed ventilation space on both front and rear rack sides to avoid airflow blockage and thermal hotspots.

1. Maintenance & OIR Specification

• 1RU chassis fan assembly: Non-hot-swappable. Power off the router completely before disassembly.
• 2RU chassis fan tray: Supports limited OIR. Complete replacement quickly; prolonged removal triggers thermal protection.
  IOS XE automatically detects and validates fan hardware after successful installation.

1. System Monitoring & Alarm Notification
   IOS XE continuously monitors individual fan rotor RPM status.

• Green status: All internal fan rotors run normally within rated speed range
• Amber status: Single fan rotor fault detected
• Blinking Amber: Multiple fan faults or fan tray missing
  The system generates console syslog messages and SNMP traps to notify network administrators once fan anomalies occur.

1. N+1 Fan Redundancy

   Multiple independent fan rotors are integrated into a single tray assembly. If one rotor fails, remaining fans provide temporary partial cooling capacity. Stable operation with single fan failure is guaranteed below 1829 m altitude. Engineers should arrange immediate FRU replacement upon receiving fault alerts to eliminate overheating outage risks.
